Android Oreo (Go Edition) is Google’s lightweight version of Android 8.1 Oreo aimed primarily for distribution on smartphones in developing nations. It makes better use of low-end hardware thanks to a suite of optimized applications and a number of under-the-hood changes. Motorola is looking to get in on the action and will be releasing the Moto E5 Play with Android Go in Europe and Latin America. Note that this is not the same Moto E5 Play that was announced back in April.
So what can we expect to see from this device? Despite having the same name, it’s an entirely different device compared to the device released in April. It sports an 18:9 5.3-inch display, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a selfie flash. That’s pretty much all we know about it, though. We don’t know the processor, screen resolution, the amount of RAM, and pretty much anything else about the device. If we had to take a guess about the RAM, it’s likely 1GB which is typical for Android Oreo (Go Edition) devices.
Design-wise, it’s the typical Motorola design language that we’ve come to see across the majority of their devices. The fingerprint has the Moto logo emblazoned on it, and the bottom bezel has the Motorola logo inscribed on it.
Motorola is the second big player to enter the Android Go market in Europe, with Samsung potentially releasing a device in the future too. In terms of cost, Motorola has announced that it will retail at €109 (~$128). It’ll be made available later this month, which is strange since we barely have any information about exactly which European and Latin American countries it will be available in.
