Spotify on Android will finally let you re-order songs in playlists

Spotify

If you haven’t heard about Spotify before, it is one of the largest and most popular music streaming services. With a user base of 170 Million users as of Q1 2018, of which 75 Million are paying subscribers, Spotify comes ahead of competitors like Apple Music, which has 50 Million subscribers (including those on free trials). The percentage of subscribers has also increased from 31% in 2015 to 44%, although revenues from 2018 are expected to be below 30%. This is partly because Spotify continues to under-monetize the advertising potential on its app for the sake of customer experience and engagement.

While under-monetizing may help with customer experience to an extent, what directly affects customer experience is adding in long-requested functionality and basic quality-of-life improvements. The stickiness of an app and its ability to keep a user engaged hinges on providing these basic features which the rest of the competition already has.

Spotify already does provide a great user experience across all the platforms it supports, but there’s always room for improvement. For instance, one of the most long-requested features for Spotify is the ability to rearrange tracks in a playlist on the Android app. Features like these are considered essential and basic. There simply was no good explanation on why this was ignored and avoided by the team for 4 long years!

The wait is finally over, as Spotify has announced that they are now working on this feature. An upcoming version of the Android app will see this feature initially rolled out to a small number of users. Based on the feedback and corresponding changes, we expect the feature will eventually roll out to the rest of the user base on Android. If it doesn’t, you can always wait for a few more years, right?
