Nokia Reintroduces Beta Labs Program for Android 8.0 Oreo Beta Testing

We have a number of smartphone OEMs these days holding their own beta program in an attempt to get the public to try out an unreleased version of Android. Samsung did this with Nougat last year and OnePlus recently pushed out their first Open Beta for the new Oreo update on the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T. Nokia has just reintroduced their Beta Labs program for their new Nokia smartphones for those who want to try out the upcoming Oreo update on the Nokia 8.

Nokia has been around since 1865 but they became a household name in the cell phone market during the 90’s and beyond, with the Symbian OS platform. Following this success, they introduced the first Nokia Beta Labs program back in 2007 which basically just linked to other beta Nokia applications. This expanded throughout the years as a way to beta test a number of different applications and was then rebranded to Lumia Beta Apps following the Microsoft rebranding period.

So today Juho Sarvikas, the Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, just announced that the company is bringing back Nokia’s Beta Labs program as a way to launch a beta program for Android 8.0 Oreo. Starting with the Nokia 8, owners will be able to go to http://ift.tt/2xlbmUP and sign up to be part of the program. In a follow up Tweet, Mr. Sarvikas says that the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 6 will be included in the Nokia Beta Labs program for the Oreo update and that they were “just starting” with the Nokia 8.

We were previously told that all current generation Nokia smartphones with Android will receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update. At the time, the company says they were unable to comment on timing but an interview later that month (September) had Mark Trundle, HMD Global’s General Manager for Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia regions, confirming the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and the Nokia 6 would receive Oreo before the end of the year. Whether this was in reference to the beta program or their stable builds is anyone’s guess right now.
