Android Oreo Version 8.1 Developer Preview 1 Released

Having just launched the Pixel 2 & 2 XL,Google has announced the developer preview of Android Oreo version 8.1, which comes with some improvements over the initial release of Android Oreo. Some of these changes may include DNS over TLS support, IPPS-only printers, Google Cast notification fixes and more! We’ll have to confirm each of these individually, but all of these were merged into AOSP so should be in Android 8.1.

As always, the developer preview can only be downloaded on Google Pixel and Nexus devices. This will likely be the final release for the Nexus line. The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are the only Nexus devices to receive the developer preview, and this is likely the final upgrade they will receive. The Nexus devices were slated to release their final major updates in September 2017, but it seems Google is upgrading both devices to version 8.1.

Along with the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, Google will also be offering developer preview images for the Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Google Pixel C, Google Pixel 2 and the Google Pixel 2 XL. The Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL are going to receive 3 major upgrades, and are Google’s latest flagship release, so it’s absolutely no surprise that they are receiving the upgrade.

Flashing the image will require you to unlock your bootloader, which will wipe your data. If you are flashing the developer preview image, make sure to back up your data beforehand. You can follow the full instructions on how to flash the developer preview image below, but also keep in mind that because it’s a developer preview you will find bugs. The whole point of the release is so developers can prepare for any system changes, and so that Google can learn about any bugs or fix stability or performance issues. Follow the link below if you’re still interested in trying it out!
