How to Enable Fingerprint Selfie on the Xiaomi Redmi 3s

If you’ve ever accidentally brushed your finger against the fingerprint sensor on your Xiaomi Redmi 3s, you may have noticed the device act weird. In particular, you may have seen your phone start to randomly select text. This is because, for some reason, Xiaomi made the fingerprint sensor send the DPAD_CENTER KeyEvent whenever it was pressed. Thankfully, there’s a simple change we can do to make the fingerprint sensor more useful. XDA Senior Member dineshthangavel47 has proposed a modification which enables the fingerprint sensor to open the camera app and take a photo!

In order to make this modification, you will need root access and a root enabled file explorer. We recommend MiXplorer from our Apps & Games forum!

Simply locate the file /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl, search “key 353” without quotes, and replace the DPAD_CENTER line with “CAMERA”.

That’s it! Now save the file and reboot. When your device is unlocked, touching the fingerprint sensor will open the camera and take a photo! Enjoy!
