An interesting tip was just sent our way by XDA Senior Member mweinbach. According to an APK teardown of the most recent Settings APK from the latest Android Oreo beta for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, there appears to be a new feature in works for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9. Called Intelligent Scan, the feature reportedly “combines face and iris scanning to improve accuracy and security even in low or very bright light.”
For those of you who aren’t familiar, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has an iris scanner than can be used for biometric entry of passwords. The Samsung Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ do not offer an iris scanner and nowhere in the Galaxy Note 8’s software is an “Intelligent Scan” mentioned, so it is presumed that these new strings refer to a feature on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. mweinbach uploaded the following video which is presumably the demonstration graphic that Samsung places in Settings to show the user how the feature works.
According to the full strings obtained from the teardown, Intelligent Scan can be used to unlock the Galaxy S9/S9+ as soon as the screen turns on. This is similar to the Face Unlock feature on the OnePlus 5T, however, Samsung is combining the Iris Scanner to ensure accuracy even in low or bright light conditions.
Intelligent Scan can also be used to verify yourself in applications, provided the app supports it. You can find the full strings obtained from a teardown of the Note 8 Settings APK below. We’re bound to hear more about this feature in the coming weeks, especially as we inch closer to the official unveiling on February 25th. Most of the specifications as well as the look of the device have already been leaked, however, so don’t expect anything too surprising to be revealed.
