Validus Brings Fling, Pulse, SmartBar, and Built-In Settings Themes to Android Oreo ROMs

The Ground Zero ROMs Android development team has released a new wave of Validus builds, which are among the first publicly-released ROMs to feature the Dirty Unicorns Interface (DUI). Thanks to the efforts of XDA Senior Members John Brewer (TheRingMaster_GzR) and Mirko Weser (fraz14) among others in the Ground Zero ROMs team you can run DUI (Fling, Pulse, and SmartBar originally developed by the Dirty Unicorns team) and built-in dark system themes in Android Oreo right now on supported devices.

Another highlight is the ability to theme the app icons in the Recents view via icon packs. Below is a gallery of some of the ROM’s highlights in action (each screenshot also features SmartBar in action from DUI):

Validus is the first Oreo ROM I’ve seen that offers 8 different custom color schemes with dark backgrounds. While many custom ROMs offer a dark UI, it’s usually only one option with an inverted background and the stock AOSP accent colors. You can also apply an icon pack to the app icons on the top left corner of each thumbnail in standard Recents view. It’s not as extensive as the system-wide CyanogenMod Theme Engine (and a few test builds of Layers and Substratum) used to offer, but it could be the beginnings of a native system-wide icon pack implementation.

The approach traditionally taken by the Ground Zero ROMs team has been to combine a few of the most popular features from other ROMs, but not so many that performance and stability suffer. It’s nice to see them striking out on their own in a few areas while still including popular features from outside projects. You can find these new Validus builds (look for builds dated in early December) for supported devices in the Ground Zero ROMs forum or in their G+ community.
