For the most part, the popularity of Android tablets has been dwindling. The current situation is that premium Android tablets are a dying breed. Although some smaller Android tablets still exist, they have mostly been replaced by 5.5-inch and above smartphones. In the premium price bracket, Samsung has continued to release high-end tablets, but the company has few competitors at this point. One of them, though, is Huawei.
A few days ago, the Huawei MediaPad M4 was discovered via a User Agent Profile (UAProf) document. This was planned to be the successor of the MediaPad M3, which was launched in September 2016 with an 8.4-inch 2560×1600 display and the HiSilicon Kirin 950 system-on-chip. Now, though, Mobilekopen found that a Huawei device with model numbers SHT-W09 and SHT-AL09 has received Bluetooth certification. Its name? The Huawei MediaPad M5.
Why MediaPad M5 and not MediaPad M4? The reason is something that we’ve (predictably) heard before: companies don’t launch products with the number 4 in China because of tetraphobia.
The MediaPad M5 will have an 8.4-inch display with QXGA (2560×1600) resolution—the same size and resolution as the display of its predecessor. The Bluetooth certification of the device confirms the support of Bluetooth 4.2. Also, the User Agent Profile has previously shown that the tablet will be powered by Android 8.0 Oreo. In comparison, the MediaPad M3 was launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and it received an update to Android 7.0 Nougat later.
Huawei’s latest MediaPad is said to be powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 960 system-on-chip. This isn’t HiSilicon’s latest processor—that would be the Kirin 970 found on the Mate 10 series—but it’s still a high-end octa-core processor with four 2.4GHz ARM Cortex-A73 cores and four 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores paired with a Mali-G71MP8 GPU.
Mobielkopen notes that the Bluetooth certification is one of the tests that mobile devices have to go through before they are released, which means that their release isn’t far away, generally speaking. In the case of the Huawei MediaPad M5, we still don’t know its official launch date, but it’s plausible to expect the device to be announced soon. It may happen in the month of January at CES, but Huawei hasn’t confirmed any details as of yet, so we will have to wait a bit more before we learn more information about this device.
