Android Oreo Update Now Rolling Out to the HTC U11 in Taiwan

The HTC U11 was announced in May as HTC’s flagship smartphone for the first half of 2017. It was the third smartphone in the U series after the U Ultra and the U Play. The U11 was the first HTC flagship which dropped unibody metal construction in favour of using an aluminium frame in conjunction with a 3D glass back. The U11 had top-notch hardware specifications such as the Snapdragon 835 SoC, 4/6GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, and an excellent 12MP camera.

The device was generally well-received by reviewers, and early reports suggested that the sales of the U11 were higher than the sales of the preceding flagships, the HTC 10 and the One M9. In terms of software, the U11 launched with Android 7.1 Nougat along with HTC’s proprietary Sense UI, which does not have a version number anymore as the Taiwanese company has moved closer to the AOSP UI over the last few years.

Since the U11’s launch, momentous events have happened for HTC in terms of its financial situation. After recording the lowest amount of revenue in 13 years in the month of August, part of HTC’s smartphone division was bought by Google in September for $1.1 billion. The deal is on track to be closed by early 2018, according to HTC’s Vice President. Since then, we’ve also seen the company announce a mid-cycle refresh of the U11, the HTC U11+.

When it comes to the Android Oreo update, HTC announced back in August that the company would roll out the update to the U11, U Ultra and the HTC 10. At that time, the company did not give any timeline. Now, thanks to Shimon Das, we now know that the stable Android 8.0 Oreo update is rolling out to Taiwanese U11 units. The update with version number 2.31.709.1 has the November 1, 2017 security patch level.

The OTA update has a size of 1.3GB, and includes VoWifi service for CHT customers in Taiwan. Screenshots shared by Mr. Das indicate that the Sense UI is slightly changed in the Oreo update, with Oreo’s light-coloured notification menu and an Oreo-themed Settings app.

HTC hasn’t stated when the update will roll out to the global variant of the U11. Considering that the stable software is already available on Taiwanese units, the company is expected to start the roll out in the coming weeks.
