ZUK, a Lenovo backed Chinese company, made waves last year for the promising ZUK Z1. On the face of it, the spec sheet and value it brought to the customer made it a spiritual successor to the OnePlus One. It had some flagship grade specs at an affordable value. And if you purchased the international model, you also got Cyanogen OS.
Today, ZUK took the wraps off the ZUK Z2 Pro, the successors to last years ZUK Z1. Interestingly, there is no mention of a normal (non-Pro) ZUK Z2, and the Z2 Pro itself comes in two variants.
Starting off with the design, the ZUK Z2 Pro goes for the metal and glass combination. The metallic mid frame is sandwiched between glass on the front and back, although you get gentle curves on the back despite the back. The fingerprint sensor finds its way onto the front of the device in the form of a physical button, where it also shares the space with a 5.2″ FHD Super AMOLED display. ZUK claims the bezels on the Z2 Pro as 0.05 mm thin, which sounds very unbelievable and virtually bezelless, and we have a hard time believing that.
For the specs, the ZUK Z2 Pro gets the flagship treatment, coming in with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. The Z2 Pro comes in two RAM + Storage combinations: the Standard Edition gets 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, while the Exclusive Edition gets a whooping 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There is no mention of expandable storage, but both the Z2 Pro variants should suffice for the needs of the average consumer. You also get a USB 3.1 Type C port, which supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 standards to charge that 3,100mAh battery. In addition to these, the ZUK Z2 boasts of 10 sensors including a heartbeat sensor and a UV sensor.
The ZUK Z2 Pro also packs in a decent punch in the camera department with a 13MP rear camera with an aperture of f/1.8, OIS and PDAF. The front is a 8MP shooter.
The ZUK Z2 Pro will be sold at 2699 RMB ($415) for the Exclusive Edition in China. No information is available on the Standard Edition as well as International availability of the device. Curiously, there are no mentions of the OS version, but the Chinese version of the device will most likely come with ZUK’s own ZUI skin atop Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
The ZUK Z2 Pro, just like its predecessor, packs in a lot of goodies at a very affordable price range. We hope to learn soon of the international availability of the device, as well as the software promise on the same.
