It’s not secret that Google has been working on incorporating podcasts into Google Play Music. After all, they did announce the service back in October of 2015, however, it was restricted to users uploading their podcasts. A rather smart move, at the time, as it gave content creators several months to fill the new marketplace with podcasts so the service wouldn’t be empty upon launch.
Back in February of this year, some users reported seeing the podcast interface show up within Google Play Music, perhaps as part of a staged roll-out test to gauge the waters. Finally, late last week NPR leaked that the podcast service would be unveiled sometime this week. It turns out that leak was right, as Google has today officially unwrapped Play Music Podcasts.
Available now on the web (but only in the United States and Canada for now), you can listen to podcasts within Google Play Music. Play Music Podcasts will use a contextual playlist feature similar to Google Play Music to bring you podcasts relevant to your interests. You can subscribe to your favorite podcasts and be notified of any new episodes and even choose to download them automatically. We’re not yet sure how this new feature stacks up against the very best of the current crop of podcast apps, but once we get our hands on it ourselves we’ll let you know so stay tuned. The service will gradually roll out to users of the Google Play Music app but it’s unclear if the service will require an app update or will simply be enabled server-side. Podcasters looking to get into the new service can still upload their work via the Play Music Podcast portal
